Description

Since anaerobes often grow more slowly than aerobes or facultative anaerobes, and because clinical specimens containing anaerobes often contain a mixture of organisms, considerable time may elapse before a microbiology laboratory is able to provide a final report on the anaerobe species present in a specimen.

The collection of appropriate specimens for anaerobic culture and the use of optimal anaerobic conditions for laboratory processing of these specimens can significantly improve the isolation of anaerobic bacteria, accelerate reporting of results, reduce laboratory costs and even reduce patient care costs and mortality.

This presentation will discuss the characteristics of anaerobic bacteria, compare the available methods for achieving anaerobic culture conditions and summarize good laboratory practices for the isolation and culture of these organisms, with an emphasis on clinical anaerobic bacteriology.
