Living cells are increasingly being used in modern therapy methods such as blood transfusions, stem cell therapies and bone marrow transplantations, or in the regeneration of severe burns. As the standard cultivation of these cells in open systems is associated with a high contamination risk, the Fraunhofer IST has developed a method which provides the possibility to work in closed bag systems without contamination. To achieve adherent cell growth on the interior surfaces of the bag, the surfaces of the interior faces of the bag are coated automatically by atmospheric pressure plasma.
