Mass spectrometry is used to measure the mass of atoms and molecules, and if the analyzer in use is an electric quadrupole, then it is referred to as a quadrupole mass spectrometer. KNAUER, a mid-sized, owner-operated family company, has been serving the scientific sector for more than 55 years, developing and manufacturing scientific instruments of superior quality for liquid chromatography systems and components. One of the most recent innovations to come out of the Berlin-based company is the 4000 MiD, a single quadrupole mass spectrometer that adds mass-directed purification to its portfolio of preparative HPLC systems. The application of mass spectrometry in preparative HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) enables scientists to purify target molecules directly according to their molecular weight. Natural substances, pharmaceuticals and other small organic molecules can thus be purified in a method that saves time and money.

The KNAUER 4000 MiD covers a mass range of 50 to 800 m/z. KNAUER wants its latest innovation to get mass spectrometry into places where no other mass spectrometer could ever have been used before, which is why the vacuum system and electronics of the 4000 MiD have been integrated into such a compact housing. This miniaturization drives down nitrogen consumption and therefore reduces costs, as does the user-friendly plug-and-play consumables concept and the entirely tool-less front end. Along with the MiDas flow splitter, KNAUER recommends the 4000 MiD as the ideal addition to preparative HPLC systems and mass-directed purification.
