Description

Micro bioreactors – bioreactors with a volume less than one milliliter – are becoming increasingly important for the bioprocess development. Their reduced size not only leads to a reduction in space and resource requirements, but also enables a higher degree of automation and parallelization and therefore increasing throughput. However, the small volumes are accompanied by challenges to ensure an adequate mixing and oxygen supply of the cultivated cells. In addition, the development and integration of special sensors is essential in order to quantify for example the biomass, the pH value or the dissolved oxygen concentration in a reliable and precise manner. The micro bioprocess engineering usually uses optical-chemical sensors for this purpose, which allow non-invasive measurements.
