Description

Since several years, intensive efforts have been made to replace animal experiments for the assessment of health risks, e.g. by cosmetics, with alternative methods. This is also the case for drug development. Simple cell culture systems are already being used, especially in preclinical settings. Through the development of organotypic 3D tissue equivalents and their combination with microfluidic systems up to organ on chip, valid and significant in vitro models can be established with the potential to replace a large number of animal experiments, e.g. in the determination of pharmacokinetic parameters, and to be accepted as a replacement method by the regulatory authorities in the future.
