Microalgae consist of high-value products, like carotenoids, vitamins and omega fatty acids, and, thus, have high potential in food and feed industry sectors and as cosmeceuticals and pharmaceuticals. Increasing bioavailability and economic extraction of relevant products are major challenges. Traditional cell disruptive techniques are often unsuitable for high through-puts, cost intensive and may be damaging to the product. Hence, an economical feasible commercial process is hardly possible. The focus of the applied research project was the de-velopment of a novel and continuous extrusion process allowing for an increased cell wall per-foration by optimizing process engineering and application specific parameters. As a conse-quence, damaging of sensitive compounds can be avoided and economic aspects are taken into account.
