Labs become more intelligent, but the selection of the experiments needed to develop or optimize a biotechnological process or product often remains based on trial-and-error. Indeed, even if Design of Experiments (“DoE”) is widely recognized - e.g. by the FDA - as the key instrument for ensuring efficient experimentation, it is perceived as too complex by many practitioners.
We present an approach to DoE that implements the natural workflow of experimentation. It integrates the findings of user experience experts who have analysed the needs of DoE users from the process industry. We show how their recommendations have been implemented within the completely new version 6.0 of the DoE expert system STAVEX. DoE becomes as easy to use as a phone app, which suppresses the hurdle to apply it.
