With the increasing use of next-generation sequencing (NGS) for various applications, comes the growing need to meet individual project requirements. One approach to customizing NGS is to separate the sequencing workflow into major modules, which the user can flexibly select and define. Alternatively, all-in-one solutions which combine pre-sequencing, sequencing and bioinformatics could present a valid alternative for common sequencing applications. Here, a comparison of standardised versus modular approaches to NGS will be presented and benefits of each strategy will be discussed.
