Laser microtomy is a novel method to prepare thin sections for histological analysis. Thin sections of non-decalcified hard tissue can be generated in adequate thickness and quality as well as thin sections of implanted vessels and heart valves for common staining methods. Serial sectioning is possible. In comparison to ground section technology laser microtomy reduces the throughput time per sample and also the effective time a technician has to work on it. The integrated imaging system, the so called optical coherence tomography (OCT), allows 2D and 3D-sectioning with µm-precision. Therefore the laser system is also able to prepare defined 3D samples for biomolecular or other biochemical analysis. By laser microtomy the duration of preclinical animal trials can be shortened and the quality of the histological analysis is substantially increased.
