Optical sensors can easily be miniaturized and applied e. g. in small-scale stirred bioreactors, without disturbing the culture environment or liquid flow. They do neither require reference cells nor consume the analyte during sampling-free measurements. One of the greatest advantages of chemical-optical sensors is the possibility of remote sensing: measure through transparent or even slightly colored vessel walls and optical windows ? this reduces the risk of contamination to a minimum.
