FILK division Collagen / Biopolymers is intensively involved in the research about how the structure of collagenous materials is influenced by extraction, preparation and processing. Different preparation technologies leadto to different material properties. The findings in collagen research are basis for the development of new collagenous materials for various applications.
Collagen extracted from hide, tendon and other connective tissues is used as raw material in many different branches such as food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry and for the manufacture of medical devices. It can be processed into foils, strands, tubes and 3D parts to manufacture meat packages, casings, hemostyptic sponges, implants, drug delivery systems and also scaffolds for tissue engineering. Collagen can also be hydrolysed into gelatine and non gelling peptides.
